Amid the sands of time, the essence of education has evolved from the rudimentary lessons of hunter-gatherers to the structured systems of today. Yet, amidst this evolution, a question emerges from the shadows: What is the future of education in an era where information is as abundant as the air we breathe?

My journey to answering this question took center stage at TEDx Pretoria in 2022, a culmination of not just months of preparation but a lifetime of lived experiences, challenges, and revelations about the nature of learning itself.


The Prelude to TEDx

Imagine, if you will, a neophyte public speaker with just a handful of appearances to his name, stepping into the arena of ideas that is TEDx. The road to this moment was fraught with anticipation and self-doubt. From the initial application, submitted with a heart full of hope and a mind bracing for rejection, to the final hours of rehearsal, each step was a leap towards the unknown.


Three months before the event, my application was cast into the digital ether, a message in a bottle to the curators of TEDx. To my astonishment, the universe replied with an invitation to the final rounds of evaluation. The challenge? To articulate a keynote that was still a mere wisp of thought, a ghost of ideas yet to be fully formed.



With each passing week, the essence of my message began to coalesce. It was a narrative rooted in the transformative power of self-directed learning, inspired by personal struggles and the theoretical frameworks that provided a beacon in the darkness. Yet, as the event drew nearer, the specter of time loomed large. A pivotal decision lay before me: to refine and perfect my existing speech or to venture into the abyss of revision in pursuit of something greater.



The Heart of the Message

At the core of my TEDx Pretoria speech was a simple yet profound truth: the landscape of education is shifting beneath our feet. We stand at the precipice of a new era, where the traditional gatekeepers of knowledge are rendered obsolete by the sheer volume of information at our fingertips.

This revelation was not just theoretical but deeply personal. I recounted the story of a young Kenyan couple, my parents, who embarked on a journey to a newly democratic South Africa in 1995. And in out upbringing their ethos of thoughtful dialogue shaped my early years, setting the stage for a lifelong quest for knowledge, unfettered by the conventional constraints of education.


Yet, this journey was not without its obstacles. Diagnosed with dyslexia, I grappled with the traditional methods of learning, yearning for a mode of education that resonated with my unique way of seeing the world. This struggle illuminated the first principle of self-directed learning: the need for a customized, adaptive approach that honors the individual learner's strengths and challenges.

Drawing on the work of thinkers like Lev Vygotsky and the authors of "The Self-Driven Child," I spoke of the Zone of Proximal Development and the three pillars of self-determination theory: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. These concepts became the bedrock of my own mentorship program, a testament to the transformative potential of self-directed learning.


Reflections and Looking Forward

In the months following TEDx Pretoria, my exploration of self-directed learning has only deepened. The mentorship program, though in its infancy, has already begun to bear fruit, challenging and expanding my understanding of education's future.

Looking ahead, I see a world where education transcends the physical and cultural barriers that have long divided us. It is a future where each of us can become both learner and mentor, part of a global network of knowledge and discovery.

This vision is not without its challenges, chief among them the need to democratize access to information and to empower individuals to take control of their learning journeys. Yet, I remain hopeful.
